Welcome to my design portfolio
The voice indicator is a design created for the Fixperts design awards, working alongside our client, a first responder paramedic. During Covid-19 paramedics were required to wear large respirators which make communication incredibly difficult. Therefore we developed the PPE voice indicator to make communication simple
Initially, my first design was to use a radio transmitter device that can be paired together and provides real-time and clear conversation. This design uses a bone conduction speaker to keep the user's ears free to hear whilst wearing the device.
With more time and development the solution to this design issue would most likely have likely worked similarly to this design.
Some of our initial designs for the voice-activated LED strip included a simple air-tight box that can be easily decontaminated and attached to the visor of the PPE.
We additionally experimented with using speakers attached to suction cups to stick to the front of the mask. The idea was that the speaker will be amplified through the screen making it much clearer for the other person to understand.
Additional designs for the voice indicator would have included this voice amplification technology to improve the communication quality.
We were very pleased when our design won the 2020 Fixperts design contest for the "Design for a Pandemic" award.
